U.S. employers are reporting higher levels of confidence, as 22 percent report plan to pick up hiring, according to a new survey by ManpowerGroup. The percentage is at its highest level in four years.
According to the survey, the Net Employment Outlook for the third quarter is 12 percent, up from 11 percent during the second quarter and the same period last year.
By sector, construction employers anticipate a moderate increase in hiring in the third quarter, with the Net Employment Outlook rising 8 percentage points compared with the second quarter. The construction industry last surpassed the current outlook of 18 percent in third quarter 2007.
Employers in the leisure and hospitality industry also indicate a moderate increase in hiring in the third quarter, with an outlook increase of 6 percentage points.
Moreover, for the second consecutive quarter, employers in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., report positive hiring plans, with the strongest outlook, 23 percent, from North Dakota.
Employers in all Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) also report positive hiring plans, with the strongest outlook in Des Moines, Iowa, reaching 26 percent, according to the survey.
Of the more than 18,000 employers surveyed, 22 percent anticipate an increase in staff levels in their third-quarter hiring plans, while 6 percent expect a decrease in payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 16 percent. When seasonally adjusted, the Net Employment Outlook becomes 12 percent.
Seventy percent of employers expect no change in their hiring plans. The final 2 percent of employers are undecided about their hiring intentions, according to the survey.
