A leader who helps the organization develop the capabilities required for future success. This means:
- Partnering with business leaders to understand strategic priorities before designing learning solutions.
- Identifying emerging capability gaps before they become business risks.
- Embedding learning into the flow of work rather than separating learning from work.
- Using AI thoughtfully to scale learning while strengthening the human capabilities that drive innovation, trust and sound judgement.
- Most importantly, it means ensuring that every significant learning investment can be connected to a measurable business outcome.
Learning is no longer about delivering programs. It is about enabling organizational performance.
Questions every CLO should ask
Perhaps the most important question is no longer: “How many people completed the program?” Instead, learning leaders with their organization’s future in mind should ask:
- Which business outcome are we trying to influence?
- Which organizational capabilities will make that outcome possible?
- Are we developing skills that will remain valuable as AI continues to evolve?
- Is learning embedded within the everyday flow of work?
- Are managers reinforcing capability after formal learning ends?
- How will we know that learning created measurable business value?
These questions move learning beyond administration. They position learning as a strategic business discipline.
Looking ahead
The organizations that thrive in the future will not necessarily be those with the largest learning budgets or the most extensive course catalogues. They will be the organizations that intentionally design learning around business outcomes and continuously strengthen organizational capability.
Learning leaders have an unprecedented opportunity to shape that future. By designing learning backward, they help organizations build the adaptability, resilience and human capability required to navigate constant change.
Learning is no longer a function that supports the business. It is the capability that enables every other organizational capability to grow.
In the years ahead, the most influential CLOs will not be remembered for the number of programs they launched or the volume of content they produced.
They will be remembered for something far more significant: Building an organization that outlasts technologies, adapts to disruption and converts learning into measurable business value.
