The United States needs a workforce skilled in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and a group of organizations is uniting to ensure that the nation gets the message.
This summer, thousands of education, policy and industry thought leaders will convene in Dallas, Texas for STEM Solutions 2012, a leadership summit that will seek to bring the best minds and practices together on a national stage to open the conversation and develop solutions to the STEM skills shortage.
Among the STEM stakeholders who have signed on to get behind the Summit is the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). As one of the conference’s co-chairs, CAEL will seek to provide topical input, expertise and support during the conference.
The organizers of STEM Solutions 2012 identified CAEL as a change maker involved in shaping the economy’s future due to its involvement in so many progressive initiatives.
For instance, CAEL manages EPCE, the Energy Providers Coalition for Education, which connects the dots through “Light Up Your Future,” a high school career and technical education program designed to excite high school students about math and science and encourage career exploration in the energy industry. NACTEL, the National Coalition for Telecommunications Education and Learning, is also managed by CAEL.
This industry coalition sponsored the development of VIVIDFuture, an interactive career exploration tool, linked to education, which allows students to explore and prepare for jobs in the telecommunications industry. Further, CAEL has worked with several bio science organizations to build Web-based career paths linked to education, ultimately leading to skilled jobs in this field.
Finally, CAEL works with high schools and colleges to build user-friendly, customized STEM curriculum which serves as the pathway into jobs in STEM fields.
