When one person tells you something, it’s interesting to hear. When groups of people tell you something, you’ve probably spotted a trend. When everyone seemingly is on the same page, consider it a landslide.
I’ve seen that theory firsthand now, as I’ve experienced four events over three months that all had one thread in common. I can’t wait to share that groundswell with you.
First is the CLO Think Tank. In short, it’s an invitation-only event we held, bringing together a powerful baker’s dozen of learning leaders at the Microsoft Executive Briefings Center.
The Think Tank melded into the second program, the CLO Symposium. We turned to the learning leaders at the Think Tank to serve in speaking roles at the Symposium.
Third on the list is the annual Learning In Practice Awards program we produce — the 2006 winners were announced at an Oct. 5 ceremony at the CLO Symposium. We’ll be profiling them in more depth in a special supplement we will include with the December issue.
Finally, let me tell you about the CLO Colloquium, our continuing education program that debuted in September (look for the next outing this December). Having taken an early look at the Learning In Practice winners, I kept biting my tongue at the Colloquium, striving for a poker face each time one name was mentioned as a benchmark of quality.
That name was Dr. David Vance, president of Caterpillar University, the thread tying all this together. With David’s shining example on everyone’s lips everywhere we went, we were proud to name David the CLO of the Year on Oct. 5. Following in the footsteps of Frank Anderson of Defense Acquisition University and Ted Hoff of IBM, David now is the frontman for the workforce development industry through October 2007.
David participated in the Think Tank, facilitated a discussion group at the Symposium, earned a standing ovation at the awards program and was the subject of conversation at the Colloquium. If you don’t already know David and the work he and his team are producing, we look forward to introducing him to you. But in this case, his reputation clearly precedes him.
Let me end this month’s letter with a word of congratulations to David and all the CLO Learning In Practice Award honorees. Awards this year were presented in two divisions, with Division I serving companies with fewer than 10,000 employees and Division II for companies with more than 10,000 employees. We fielded a record number of nominations, and the following 2006 Learning In Practice Award winners truly are the strategic thinkers on which our industry relies.
