Kathy Gallo, senior vice president and CLO of Northwell Health says one of her key priorities is to stay connected to the business goals of the organization. In order to stay relevant, Gallo says a learning organization must move as quickly as the industry that it’s in.

Our audience varies, we have administrators, we have clinicians, and so we work very closely with the business units to identify what their needs are, what their goals and objectives are to be able to help the larger organization achieve success, and so our programs vary. If we’re dealing with clinicians, the programs will even vary among the disciplines. So, cardiac surgery will have a different program than emergency medicine or pediatrics. For our high potential program and our physician executive programs, they have differences depending on who’s in the programs. We do bring all those parties together several times during the program, so that they can learn together and work together since that’s how they have to operate.
We treat each program like they’re the only program when we’re working with them, and they each have their own set of challenges. Depending on where you’re learning structure is in your organization, I think the key priority and goal is to be very connected to the business goals of the organization. The learning organization is there only because the business is there. If a learning organization isn’t moving as quickly as the industry that it’s in, it will not be relevant in the future. I think technology will help enable the learning strategy to be delivered, I don’t think it’s solely dependent on technology. I think it’ll be a nice additive, and I also think it’s important that learning organizations also have some metrics or analytics around their outcomes to ensure that they’re very connected to where the larger organization is going to.Filed under: Strategy
