Keynote Chief Learning Officer Symposium

Presentations spotlight latest thought leadership on maximizing impact of workforce development

Chicago, Aug. 21, 2013 — Chief Learning Officer magazine has announced an outstanding lineup of keynote speakers for its Fall 2013 Chief Learning Officer Symposium, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Reflecting the Symposium theme, "Vision to Action: Learning's Strategic Force," the keynotes will provide business and human capital executives with inspiring thought leadership on leveraging learning as a catalyst for performance and growth.

During the opening keynote, Frans Johansson, entrepreneur, innovation consultant and author of "The Click Moment," will set the tone for the three-day Symposium by focusing on unexpected ways to unleash learning's strategic potential. Johansson will discuss how learning organizations can rethink workforce development strategy by recognizing and seizing unplanned opportunities and using them as a springboard for pursuing higher performance.

Symposium attendees also will hear from award-winning New York Times investigative business reporter Charles Duhigg. Author of "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business," Duhigg will offer a fresh perspective on why habits exist and how they can be changed. Through real-life examples and new scientific discoveries that challenge some conventional wisdom, he'll share ideas on how to harness the potential power of habits and use them for personal and professional transformation.

During the meeting, enterprise education and development leaders from all over the world will explore key industry trends and how the evolving workplace and workforce are shifting the focus for learning and development. Author and industry analyst Daniel Rasmus will explore some of the critical uncertainties facing today's learning organizations. Sharing insights from his book, "Listening to the Future," he will discuss how to better anticipate the future as it unfolds and systematically integrate what is "heard" into strategic planning and curriculum development.

Also on the speaker roster is Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson, associate director of the Motivation Science Center at the Columbia Business School and a social psychologist who researches, writes and speaks about the science of motivation. In her book, "Focus: Use Different Ways of Seeing The World for Success and Influence," co-written with E. Tory Higgins, Halvorson takes a look at the critical differences in how people are motived. During her keynote, she will discuss how employers can create "motivational fit" that increases employee engagement, enhances the perceived value of the work being done and improves productivity.

A new addition to the Symposium program this year is a special dinner on Monday, Sept. 30, honoring the winners of the 2013 CLO Learning In Practice Awards. Sponsored by Saba and Interactive Video Learning, the dinner will feature a keynote address from 2012 CLO of the Year Pat Crull, group vice president and chief learning officer at Time Warner Cable. A highly regarded leader in the industry, Crull will share some of the wisdom and insights garnered during her 33-year career, candidly summarizing the highs, lows, joys and disappointments of a lifetime spent in workforce development. The celebration will be capped off by an acoustic performance by Ken Block and Drew Copeland of the platinum-selling pop group Sister Hazel.

The CLO Symposium agenda also features panel discussions, workshops and interactive sessions, as well as opportunities to meet and network with industry leaders, vendors, and hundreds of international learning and development professionals. Attendees also have the opportunity to earn HR Certification Institute continuing education credits, as well as points toward re-certifying as Certified Performance Technologists.
