Sunday night at the 2013 LearningElite Gala hosted by the magazine at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. During the special event sponsored by Bellevue University, getAbstract and Procter & Gamble, six organizations also were singled out for their achievements with Editor’s Choice Awards. “The 2013 LearningElite have all demonstrated superior alignment of the learning function with the goals and strategy of their organizations,” said Sarah Kimmel, director of research and advisory services for Human Capital Media Advisory Group, a division of the magazine’s publisher, MediaTec Publishing. “Through a variety of different metrics and methods, they have provided rigorous evidence of the impact of training on the business.”

In her opening remarks at the gala, Kimmel, who oversees the CLO LearningElite benchmarking initiative, congratulated the LearningElite organizations for “innovating, balancing priorities, making the case for learning, increasing efficiency, and most important, serving your organizations and your employees in a way that enriches the learning industry and the world around you.” She also applauded their willingness to undergo “the demanding work and reflection required to participate in an evidence-based benchmarking program like the LearningElite.”

Again this year, the top five finalists had to complete a capstone evaluation. AT&T, McDonald’s USA LLC, UPS, Jiffy Lube International and Procter & Gamble Distributing LLC demonstrated their leadership commitment to learning via a team presentation with the capstone evaluation judging panel prior to the final decision on rankings.

“In our third year of benchmarking, competition was intense,” Kimmel said. “All the organizations participating in the LearningElite are raising the bar for the industry. This high level of commitment on their part has challenged us to continue increasing the rigor of the program. The capstone evaluation enables us to validate and verify which organizations are really the elite of the elite and the best role models for the rest of the industry.” AT&T walked away with top honors, after finishing second in last year’s LearningElite rankings.

Developed under the guidance of a group of chief learning officers and senior learning and development practitioners, LearningElite is the only peer-based benchmarking initiative that recognizes excellence using five key performance indicators: learning strategy, learning execution, learning impact, business performance results and leadership commitment.

“The 2013 CLO LearningElite program yielded solid evidence of the direct influence strategic workforce learning and development can have on innovation, performance and profits, even in a challenging economic environment,” said Norm Kamikow, president and editor in chief of MediaTec Publishing. “Being able to benchmark against the best of the best and learn from their elite workforce development practices enables LearningElite organizations of all sizes to continuously improve and positively affect business results.”

The 2013 LearningElite organizations will also be featured in the June 2013 issue of Chief Learning Officer magazine.
